The Rendlesham Forest Incident is the most famous UFO crash/retrieval event to have happened in Britain. It occurred over a three-day span in 1980 and is also known as the British version of the Roswell UFO incident along with the Berwyn Mountain Incident. It is most commonly referred to as "Britains Roswell" or the "English Roswell" It is disputed whether the incident first occurred on December 26 or December 27, although the witness statements suggest it was the 26th. The "Halt Memo" discussed below states the 27th but Halt admits that it should be the 26th. On the 27th the "Halt Tape" was recorded - this is also discussed below. Like the Roswell incident, it occurred in the proximity of two military bases, RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters (now abandoned), which were being used by the USAF, eight miles outside Ipswich, Suffolk. It is also seen as on par with the US Travis Walton abduction.

The Rendlesham Forest Incident

An unidentified flying object was seen in the area. At first, servicemen thought it was a downed aeroplane, but upon entering the forest they saw many strange lights moving through the trees, as well as a blinding light from an unidentified object. Some U.S. airmen claim to have seen a conical metallic object suspended in a yellow mist hovering over a clearing in the trees, with a pulsating blue and red circle of light above.

One eyewitness claims to have seen a triangular landing gear. The servicemen claimed that the object was clearly aware of their presence and backed off, forcing them to give chase. Later the servicemen were found in a dazed state, and local reports said that local farmyard and domestic animals had been behaving in a possessed state of fear and panic; some cows went on a stampede.

The airmen were allegedly debriefed, threatened and ordered to sign documents that vowed silence, one even claimed to have been forced to sign a

document claiming the UFO was a lighthouse beam; some reports suggest that they were reportedly ordered to stay quiet with the warning, "bullets are cheap".

Some other local reports suggest that small beings with domed heads left the craft, and (twin) base commander Gordon Williams claimed to have made sign language communication with the aliens.

The next morning, the servicemen returned with radiation detectors and found three small impressions in a triangle pattern that were radioactive. Later that night the lights returned, and nearby civilians witnessed the bright red, moving light in the forest. There are claims that the incident was videoed by the USAF but has not been made public.

The British Government has released files to researchers, as exposed first by Georgina_Bruni, but the United States continues to remain silent despite the SciFi Channel-sponsored investigation entitled "UFO Invasion at Rendlesham" , the History Channels "UFO Files - Britain's Roswell". and Coalition for Freedom of Information inquiries.

Nick Pope recommends that for a detailed account of the case itself, see Georgina Bruni's book "You Can't Tell The People" and Larry Warren's "Left At East Gate."

Scepticism

The Guardian reporter Ian Ridpath investigated the incident and wrote an article on January 2, 1985, that did much to discredit the accounts of the UFO sightings at Rendlesham. Ian first investigated the case for BBC TV’s Breakfast Time and published a subsequent report in The Guardian. . Ian Ridpath asked local residents about the lights, and most of them indicated that the light originated from a nearby lighthouse. The coastline was at a slightly lower elevation than the surrounding area, and it can create the impression of a light hovering slightly above the ground. Hence, logically speaking, if a UFO was spotted, the airmen should have seen another source of light (so that light was coming from the UFO and the lighthouse). Further details on the case can be found on his website .

Locals in the area also believed the alleged "landing marks" to simply be "rabbit diggings." Moreover, burn marks in the trees were actually axe cuts that indicated the trees were ready to be felled. To give further pause to accepting the alleged UFO sighting, a meteor was

spotted in the exact same area at exactly the time the report drawn up about the incident was created, according to the Guardian's own investigation of the matter.

Andy J. Roberts is a very well known skeptical UFO investigator, and he has gone to a lot of trouble to come up with answers to almost all the questions raised on this subject, as he did with the Berwyn Mountain Incident

The BBC reports that a former US security policeman, Kevin Conde, has said he was responsible for strange lights in a forest which sparked claims of a UFO sighting. However, Keven Conde is "unsure exactly when the prank took place, and therefore is not sure if he was inadvertantly responsible for the so-called UFO incident."

Jenny Randles wrote an extensive article in her book with Andy J. Roberts, (The UFOs That Never Were) entitled "Rendle Shame Forest" where she came ot the conclusion that "While some puzzles remain, we can probably say that no unearthly craft were seen in Rendlesham Forest."

Believers

However, as with the rational and down to earth skeptics discussed above their are also rational and down to earth believers. These include Georgina Bruni in her groundbreaking and highly regarded and meticulusly researched work "You Can't Tell the People" of which is highly recommended by MOD UFO researcher Nick Pope, as is Larry Warren's "Left At East Gate." Georgina Bruni happens the first to break the story concerning the release of MOD documents on the Rendlesham Forest incident. , of which pose credible evidence to question above all doubt the questions posed by Ian Ridpath and other.

The first researcher to break this story is the British UFOlogist Brenda Butler when she wrote the book "Sky Crash" and British UFOlogist Nick Redfern in his books "Cosmic Crashes" and "A Covert Agenda"

One if the most prominent 'Skeptical Believers' is Nick Pope and he discusses this incident in his various books and in his articles "Selected Documents" which relates to the MOD documents on the Rendlesham Forest incident exposed by Georgina Bruni, , - A detailed commentary and analysis of the MOD documents and .

Rendlesham Forest today

Today, the forest looks quite different: the hurricane of 1987 caused extensive destruction of trees, and the Forestry Commission undertook a massive replanting programme in its aftermath. However, some of the locations associated with the supposed incident are still identifiable and the Forestry Commission have waymarked a trail (the UFO Trail) for walkers, which includes the principal locations such as the small clearing where the object allegedly landed. ,
