The Ray of Creation is a metaphysical cosmology which was taught by G.I. Gurdjieff. Coming from oneness, the ray's second step is an "absolute" which is the Law of Three. There is supposed to be a distinction between the "oneness" and the "absolute" (even though these terms have similar meanings). The difference in meaning is blurred, as are many meanings in Gurdjieff teachings. It is often thought to be entirely allegorical, though some adherents would suggest a link to the physics of string theory. The overall shape of the ray is composed of levels stepping downward from the (Three in one) absolute. At each level there are a different set of Laws The third step downward has a law of six, the fourth step has a law of twelve, the fifth has a law of twenty-four, the sixth has a law of forty-eight, and the seventh has a law of ninety-six. Beyond the seventh level is an absolute again which is described as the Doh note of the octave. Each of the levels is attributed components of the universe such as stars, sun, planet, moon, allstars, though the exact arrangement varies and is generally considered allegorical. The levels are also attributed a hydrogen number corresponding to the number of laws. It is unclear whether these numbers are supposed to indicate elements in the Periodic table. If they are then three is Lithium, six is Carbon, twelve is Magnesium, Twenty-four is Chromium, Forty-eight is Cadmium and Ninety-six is Curium. The levels have been described by Gurdjieff and his followers as an example of the Law of Octaves, assigning the notes DO-RA-MI-FA-SO-LA-TI-DO and musical shocks. See also:
