A Peace Pole is a monument that displays the message and prayer "May Peace Prevail on Earth" on each of its sides, usually in different languages. The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan by the World Peace Prayer Society in 1955. Since then, more than 200,000 of them have been placed around the world, in 180 countries. A Peace Pole typically a four-sided post, is made from metal, plastic, or a local hardwood, and is typically 2.5 metres (8 ft) tall. Plastic and metal poles typically have the message printed on plastic and attached to the sides, while wooden poles have it painted or carved into the sides. Outdoor Peace Poles are typically planted into the ground, while indoor ones are either anchored into the floor or placed on a stand. Peace Poles have been placed in such notable locations as the North Magnetic Pole, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, and the site of the Egyptian Pyramids in Giza, as well as numerous community parks and other sites.
