In common usage, a mystery is a description for something which is unknown or yet unexplained. A mystery may refer to: - In religious usage, the term mystery commonly refers to that which is unknowable (as well as unknown and unexplained). In this sense, "mystery" implies both divinity (ie. divine mystery) as well as faith (where uncertainty or "doubt" have bearing on spiritual matters). According to the Encyclopedia Catholica, a mystery is "a supernatural truththat of its very nature lies above the finite intelligence".
- In Christianity, a mystery (mysterion) may refer to a phenomenon (or "action") which is manifest through overt visible signs as a means of conveying sublime, spiritual grace. In the West, this is also given the Latin term for a signed and sealed pledge, or sacrament (See also Sacred Mysteries)
- A mystery religion is a belief system based around a mystery
- In medieval Britain, mystery meant a craft, trade
or profession. Thus an apprentice to one of the guilds would be said to be "learning the mysteries" of that guild
